A Halloween Visit

Greetings, Blog Tourist ! mwa-ha-ha-ha!

See details below to collect your “treats”!!****

Writing short stories never has been one of my stronger suits.  Those who know me will tell you that my verbosity doesn’t lend itself well to that style of writing.  So, when flash fiction happened upon the writers’ scene, I quickly moved out of the way!

If you’re unfamiliar with flash fiction, here’s what Wikipedia says:  “Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme brevity. There is no widely accepted definition of the length of the category. Some self-described markets for flash fiction impose caps as low as three hundred words, while others consider stories as long as a thousand words to be flash fiction.”

Last Wednesday, fellow Florida Writers Association member Tracey Hanson posted her weekly “Hump Day Challenge” on Facebook.  Tracey’s challenge was for a piece of spooktacular Halloween flash fiction, 100 words or less, incorporating the words “fog, moonlight, stone, dripping and — malevolent.”

Well ! I have no clue what possessed me to enter but enter I did.  Here’s my little story, entitled “A Halloween Visit to Dr. Malevolent”:

Moonlight glinted on the hood of my car as I arrived for an evening appointment with my dentist Dr. Malevolent. The waiting room looked eerie — shrouded in fog accentuating the decrepit furniture.

I glanced around nervously. “Why did I make an evening appointment on Halloween!?!?”

My eyes adjusted to the dim light. I spied Miss Grim, the dental assistant. She held a stone in her hand and was sharpening some wicked-looking instruments…. Finally, she called my name, then escorted me to the chair.

Waiting, my heart palpitating, I shuddered as the dentist entered with a huge syringe dripping novocaine….

Well ! Imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail from Tracey telling me that I was … The Winner !!  She also included a link to the announcement page on her site where I was able to pick up my Winner’s Badge:

And our winner is…Candice Coghill!

Isn’t it purty ???

Tracey also included a list of runners-up:

Best Zombie Monologue: @ChuckWesJ Charles W. Jones
One that scared me the most: @TheGlitterLady
Best (hahahaha) online dating experience:
@CaraMichaels Cara Michaels
Best Tale of Whoa: @TalesofWhoa Gordon Bonnet

So, congrats to my fellow entrants and congrats to me ! Who says you can’t teach an old writer new tricks ?? The KH is quite proud of herself and may give flash fiction a go again soon.  It surely is one way to edit myself!!

If you’re into flash fiction, do yourself a favor and head on over to Tracey’s Tavern at http://www.traceystavern.com.

Oh, and by the way: HAVE A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN !!
